Opal
Opal a beautiful gem which can offer some brilliant colours, each piece unique and with its own character. It is still not fully known where Opal gained its name and there are several schools of thought, but it is strongly felt that ‘Opal’ was adapted from the Sanskrit word ‘upala’, but the debate of origin of its name continues. Opal is very Australian and is considered the national gem stone, and why wouldn’t it be? Like Australia, Opal is very unique and a colourful character, not unlike us ‘Aussies’. An Opal shows a true spectrum of colours, which can differ from the different areas in Australia where it is mined, making Opal even more individual, and increases the choice in colours and types. It was also thought, especially during the middle ages that ‘opal was considered a stone that could provide great luck because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose color was represented in the color spectrum of the opal.’ ~ Wikipedia
